Once upon a time in the kingdom of Lạc Việt (an ethnic group living in the northern Vietnam), a legend has it that Lạc Long Quân – a water Lord. He had the body of a dragon and possessed magical powers and super good health. In the mountainous area lived a beautiful fairy named Âu Cơ – a goddess of mountains. One day Âu Cơ was visiting legendary country of Lac Viet, she met, felt in love with and got married to Lạc Long Quân. When the time came, Âu Cơ laid a sac of 100 eggs from which hatched one hundred sons. These children grew up fast into healthy adults.
The hundred children of Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ divided themselves into two groups. Fifty of them followed their mother to the mountains and fifty the others followed their father to the water areas. They promised that if either group encountered misfortune, the other must help. They developed into a rich and diversified area called northern Vietnam today with wonderful mountains and rivers. They became the ancestors of the Vietnamese people.
